300 SL "GULLWINGS " W198

The 300SL roadster succeeded the Gullwing in 1957.

The 4-cylinder 190SL was more widely produced with 25,881 units, starting in 1955.

Cars of the open SL-Class were available as a coupe with a removable hardtop or as a roadster with convertible soft top or with both tops. Production for the 190SL and 300SL ended in 1963.

The Mercedes-Benz 190SL was a two door grand touring convertible with a removable hardtop. It was produced by Mercedes-Benz between May 1955 and February 1963.

A prototype was first shown at the New York Auto Show of 1954. The 190SL was sold alongside the faster, more expensive Mercedes-Benz 300SL, which it closely resembled both in its styling and in its fully independent suspension, with both cars having double wishbone suspensions at the front and swing axles at the rear.

However, the 190SL did not use the 300SL's purpose-built tubular spaceframe W198 platform, but was instead built on the shortened monocoque R121 platform, which was modified from the W121 small saloon platform

The SL-Class 230SL, a new design with a 2.3 six cylinder engine, low waistline and big curved greenhouse windows, and a Coupe Roadster whose distinctive roofline earned the nickname "pagoda top."

Around 1968 the engine received a displacement increase and the model became known as the 250SL.

The last two years of production as the 280SL saw minor changes to switch knobs, and wheel trim rings became full hubcaps.

Mercedes 280 SL W107

Mercedes 280 SL- 560 SL R107

The Mercedes-Benz R107 automobiles were produced from 1971 through 1989, being the longest single series ever produced by Mercedes.

The R107 took the chassis components of the mid size Mercedes-Benz W114 model and mated them to the larger engines from the S-Class. The W 107 chassis is also referred to as "R 107" for "Reihe" (series). The series comprised SL and SLC models.

The SL variant was a 2-seat convertible/roadster with standard soft top and hardtop. The SLC (technically C107) derivative was a 2 door hardtop coupe, with usable rear seats and in effect an SL stretched 10 inches (254 mm) with a fixed roof.
